Havana, Cuba
The first grand city built by Europeans in the New World, Havana retains the grandeur and charm of a history that spans nearly 500 years. When New York was still a collection of huts Havana was a cosmopolitan city with palaces and squares, with a high society already famous for its dances. Visit the Palacio de los Capitaines Generales, the residence of the Spanish Captains General who ruled Cuba from 1791-1898 and the Castillo Real de la Fuerza, built between 1558-77, one of the oldest surviving colonial fortress in the Americas and home to Giralda, the symbol of Cuba, as seen on the label of Havana Club rum. See the Capitolio Nacional, a huge marble building modelled on the Capitol building in Washington and visit the Museo de la Revolucion, formerly the presidential palace. Wander along El Malecon, the famous waterfront of Havana. Pay a literary pilgrimage to the Hotel Ambos Mundos where Ernest Hemingway wrote the novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
Lisbon, Portugal
Situated on the north banks of the River Tagus, the charm of Lisbon exists in its strong links to the past. Its renovated palaces, magnificent churches and an impressive castle mirror the city's rich cultural heritage and its eclectic blend of culture and architecture distinguish this capital city from its European counterparts. A city set on seven hills, with cobble-stoned pavements and narrow streets bursting with Art Nouveau cafés and curio shops, Lisbon’s modern and old towns hold equal appeal. The must-visit spots in the city are Rossio and Praça do Comércio, Baixa, St. George’s Castle, Alfama and Mouraria; and historic Belem, overlooking the River Tagus.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City is a mesmerising gateway for visitors to Vietnam where traditional and modern influences live side by side. Imagine incense-filled pagodas filled with a constant stream of worshippers; streets buzzing with the engines of countless motorbikes and pavements teeming with street vendors, barbers, dentists and cafés selling steaming bowls of noodle soup by the roadside. Amid this vibrant Asian backdrop are gleaming shopping malls, skyscrapers, coffee shops and bars that would not look out of place in the west. Ho Chi Minh City is the face of the new Vietnam.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Dynamic and bustling, a city which seems never to sleep, Buenos Aires is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. Tango was born here, restaurants serve all manner of world cuisine, bars play the latest music, cafés spill on to the streets and nightclubs stay open until breakfast. The cultural hub of a society which traces its roots to European immigration, Buenos Aires is famous throughout South America for its theatres, museums and galleries. Gucci, Armani, Prada, to name a few, line the boulevards catering for the fashion conscious porteños, their offerings as stylish as anything found in the cities in Europe or North America. A unique metropolis at the heart of Argentina.
